Sewing Level - Advanced Beginner

This is a comprehensive PDF Download pattern for my original design of - The Little Red London Bus which finishes at around 12" by 17".

About the Pattern

The pattern contains fabric requirements, tips for sourcing the products used, and a list of suggested useful notions. The PDF pattern is 13 pages in length and includes 10 full colour in process photographs. There are also full size templates for you to print at home.

Background to the Project

I made my London Bus mini wall quilt several years ago now. I demonstrated making it using Valdani perle 12  threads on the top of a sewing machine at the Houston International Quilt Show in 2017. Yep, I have only just got around to writing it up as a proper pattern (eeek!) with lots of help from my pattern tester and fabulous sewist friend Sandy Roberts.

Adaptations and Options

My little mini quilted wall-hanging finishes at around 12” by 17” but there are lots of ways to adapt it -

  • Make it in woolfelt , felted wool or all cotton
  • As a cushion with an envelope back
  • As a cushion or wallhanging with the quote " And then three came along at once" - then resize the templates a little and pop on three buses!
  • An old fashioned green bus
  • Duplicate the second deck - so you have a three storey "Harry Potter Knightbus" - in purple of course!

History around the London Buses

Sandy did a little digging around the history of London buses and found the following which is interesting and rather cool - so she added this info to her version of my bus!

“The London Bus Route 24 dates back to 1910, when it ran between Hampstead Heath and Victoria Station. In August 1912 was extended to Pimlico and has continued in that form until the present day, making this the oldest unchanged bus route in London.”

Fancy that – that bus route has operated for over 120 years!!
