Intermediate level

My quilt "Home" features  felted wool houses that stand proud and tall on a black background surrounded by a blackberry vine and anemone flowers. A quilt that works equally well in all cotton, or even all wool at a time when “Home” seems to have become more important than ever.

This quilt uses several different black cotton fabrics as a base – using various fabrics of one tone creates depth and adds a vintage feel to a background. The background is made up of three main strips and the border is mitred. Eight “straight back” houses have been appliqued to the strip centre and through the clever use of reverse wool applique have “lit” and “unlit” windows. Each door has a little button door handle. The border is designed to be full of drama… it features blackberry flowers, blackberries and anemones. It is simply quilted using a cross hatch design which for me is an echo of how our “Homes” have pulled together in recent times. The quilt finishes at 46 in x 50 in.

Although the quilt is machine appliqued, it would look equally good hand stitched in felted wools, or wool felt using Perle 12 wt threads. It would also look stunning in simply all cotton or even wool on wool by hand or machine. You could feature your own home, or even all the homes in your street!

The paper pattern booklet contains fabric requirements and suggested useful notions. The document is 15 pages in length and includes 9 full colour photographs and full size templates.
